Rex Belfast: Head in the Clouds

Year: 2009 Q4
Client: Swinburne University of Technology
Production Schedule: 4 weeks

Rex Belfast: Head in the Clouds is my first ever 3D animation – a collaboration with Kris Savoia & James Burnett in 2009. We produced the animation from storyboard to final render in just 3 & a half weeks. To save time & for greater control, many of the effects (the entire sky & background clouds for example) were created in After Effects.

This 2 minute short was an Australian finalist in the first Autodesk international ‘Panorama’ animation competition. We won a trip to Hong Kong & took part in a 4 day animation bootcamp with the 10 other finalists from around the world. The bootcamp was mentored by VFX masters from Rhythm and Hues, Lucasarts & Rising Sun Pictures.

Rex Belfast… & the subsequent boot camp I attended was the biggest kickstart to my career.
